The Ultimate Guide to Mustang Exhaust Systems (Find Your Perfect Sound)

Why Upgrade Your Mustang Exhaust?

Here’s what most Mustang owners are chasing when they change out the factory setup:

  • Sound – Let’s be honest. Stock exhausts are tame. An upgrade gives your Mustang that deep, aggressive note it should’ve had from the factory.
  • Performance – A better flowing exhaust can help free up a few extra kilowatts and improve throttle response.
  • Looks – Twin 4-inch tips out the back just look better than small factory pipes.
  • Weight reduction – Aftermarket systems often weigh less than stock gear.
  • Customisation – Tailor your Mustang’s sound to suit you — loud and proud, or a bit more refined.

Active Exhaust vs Standard

Most S550s from 2018+ and all S650s come with Active Exhaust from factory. That means your Mustang has valves in the exhaust that open or close depending on the mode you’re in (Quiet, Normal, Sport, Track).
If your car has Active Exhaust:

  • You’ll need an exhaust compatible with valve systems, or
  • You can switch to a non-valved system, but your dash will likely throw a warning unless you use valve simulators or disable it in a tune.
  • If your Mustang doesn’t have Active Exhaust:
  • You’re good to go with any system, but just know it’ll always be at full volume.
  • At MyStangMods, we stock options for both setups — browse our range here.

Axle-Back Systems

What is it?
An axle-back replaces the mufflers and rear section of your exhaust, from the rear axle back to the tips.

Pros:

  • Cheapest and easiest exhaust upgrade
  • Great way to boost sound without changing everything
  • Most axle-backs bolt on with basic tools

Cons:

  • No gains in performance
  • Still relies on factory mid-section and resonator

Looking to give your GT the bark it deserves? Check out our range of Axle-Back kits — including options for S550 and S650 models.

image

Cat-Back Systems

What is it?
A cat-back replaces everything from the catalytic converters back — this includes the mid-pipe and mufflers.

Pros:

  • More noticeable power and sound gains
  • Usually includes larger piping for better flow
  • Still emissions-legal for road use in Australia

Cons:

  • More expensive than axle-backs
  • Can be louder than you expect if paired with other mods

Want a full system with real gains? Browse our Cat-Back systems here.

X-Pipe vs H-Pipe: What’s the Difference?

This is where it gets a bit more technical — but we’ll keep it simple.

X-Pipe

  • Crisper, raspier sound
  • Slightly better flow at high RPMs
  • Popular for track builds and high-revving driving

H-Pipe

  • Deeper, old-school muscle car tone
  • Better low-end torque
  • Great for daily drivers or weekend cruisers

Both replace the factory resonator in your mid-section and are one of the easiest ways to change the sound of your Mustang.

Want to fine-tune your tone? Compare our X and HPipes for the S550 and S650 platforms.

Final Thoughts
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to exhausts — it depends on how loud you want it, what your budget is, and whether performance is a priority. If you’re just chasing sound without spending big, start with an Axle-Back. If you want a more complete setup, a Cat-Back is the way to go. And if you’re chasing that perfect tone? An X or H-Pipe swap will do the trick. Got questions or need help choosing? Hit us up — or start browsing our full Mustang exhaust range here.

How To Lower Your 2024+ S650 Mustang Withought Ruining Ride Quality

Lowering a Mustang has always been one of the go-to modifications for owners looking to improve both stance and handling. Lowering your mustang is a job that needs to be done correctly, and if done right it can make sure you maintain everyday comfort while embracing the added effects of lowering your car. The seventh-generation S650 Mustang is no exception to improvements that can be made. While it looks noticeably sharper than its predecessor straight from the factory, there’s still room to tighten up the wheel gap and enhance body control through corners. The trick is to achieve that without sacrificing ride quality—especially if your car doubles as a daily driver.

Lowering Springs: Simple and Effective
The most cost-affective way to lower your S650 is with a set of aftermarket lowering springs. Several brands have already developed options specifically for the new S650. Springs typically lower the car by around 25 to 30mm front and rear, which is enough to get the look without compromising usability. It’s worth pointing out that not all lowering springs are created equal. Cheaper or non S650 specific sets may upset the factory balance and leave the car feeling unsettled over mid-corner bumps and cornering in general. Stick with reputable brands tuned for the 2024+ platform. Herrod Performance have just released there brand new Lowering Springs for the new S650 Platform, available for both Magneride Suspension Mustang and Non-Magneride Suspension Mustangs.

SHOP LOWERING SPRINGS

Coilovers for Adjustability
For owners who want complete control over their suspension setup, coilovers are the next step up. These systems allow you to fine-tune ride height and, depending on the kit, adjust compression and rebound damping.
While coilovers are traditionally associated with track-focused builds, there are street-oriented kits that ride just as well, if not better than factory. The key is in the damping adjustment and spring rates. Most quality kits arrive pre-set for daily use and can be dialled in further depending on your preferences.

Wheel Alignment
Once the car has been lowered, you’ll need to have the suspension realigned. This is critical not only for tyre wear but also for maintaining predictable handling and steering feel.

Lowering the S650 can introduce excess negative camber and toe-out, particularly at the rear. An alignment shop familiar with performance cars will be able to correct this.

Ride Quality is All in the Details
A Mustang lowered correctly shouldn’t feel harsh or unsettled while driving. In fact, when done right, a lowered S650 should feel better than stock – more planted, more responsive, and more confident through corners.

To achieve this:

  • Stick with S650-specific suspension parts from known brands
  • Get a professional alignment after installation
  • Avoid going too low—moderation preserves geometry and comfort
Final Thoughts

The 2024+ Mustang is more refined and capable than ever, but that doesn’t mean it can’t benefit from a tasteful drop. Lowering your S650 the right way will not only transform the car’s stance, but also sharpen its dynamics without ruining ride quality. Whether you’re building a weekend cruiser or a sharper street car, taking the time to choose the right components makes all the difference. The Ultimate Guide to Mustang Suspension Upgrades (2015 – 24 | S550 / S650)OCT 23, 2024

The Ultimate Guide to Mustang Suspension Upgrades (2015 - 24 | S550 / S650)

Upgrading your Mustang’s suspension is one of the best ways to improve how your car handles, feels, and performs on the road. Whether you own the latest S650 Mustang or the 2015+ S550 model, this guide will help you understand suspension upgrades in a simple and clear way.

WHAT IS SUSPENSION AND WHY UPGRADE IT?

The suspension system is what connects your Mustang’s wheels to the car’s body. It helps control how the car rides, handles, and absorbs bumps on the road. By upgrading it, you can get a smoother ride, better cornering, and more control, especially at higher speeds or during aggressive driving. For Mustang owners who love performance, suspension upgrades are essential.

TYPES OF SUSPENSION PARTS YOU CAN UPGRADE

Here are the main parts of your Mustang’s suspension that you can upgrade:

SPRINGS

Springs hold up the car and allow travel when you drive over bumps. There are different types of springs:

  • Lowering Springs: These make your Mustang sit lower, giving it a more aggressive look and improving handling by lowering the center of gravity.

  • Performance Springs: These are designed to be stiffer, improving handling and reducing body roll but can sometimes make the ride a bit firmer.

SHOCKS AND STRUTS

Shocks and struts help absorb bumps and stiffen the cars suspension during cornering.

  • Upgraded Shocks: These can make your ride smoother while giving you more control.

  • Adjustable Shocks: These allow you to fine-tune how soft or firm your ride is, which is great for both daily driving and track use.

SWAY BARS

Sway bars (also called anti-roll bars) connect the left and right sides of your suspension to reduce body roll when cornering.
Thicker Sway Bars: These help keep your Mustang more level in corners, making it feel more stable during sharp turns.

Sway Bar Kit

COILOVERS

Coilovers combine springs and shocks into one adjustable unit.

  • Benefits of Coilovers: They give you the ability to adjust your Mustang’s ride height and stiffness, offering the best of both worlds for street driving and track use.

Coilovers

SUSPENSION CRADLE LOCKOUT KIT

The suspension cradle (or subframe) holds key parts of the rear suspension in place. Sometimes, the cradle can shift slightly when driving aggressively, as it connects to the chassis of the car using rubber bushings, which affects handling.

  • What the Lockout Kit Does: A cradle lockout kit adds stronger, more secure bushings or brackets to “lock” the subframe into place. This reduces movement and flex in the rear suspension eliminating wheel hop and giving your Mustang better stability, especially during hard launches and sharp cornering.

  • Benefits for the S550 and S650: For both the S550 and S650, a suspension cradle lockout kit is great for drivers who want a more direct, planted feel, particularly when pushing their car to its limits. It helps improve rear-end control and reduces unwanted wheel hop, making your Mustang handle better on both the street and the track.

Lockout Kit

SUSPENSION UPGRADES FOR THE S550 MUSTANG (2015+)

The 2015+ S550 Mustang already has adequate suspension from the factory, but it can still be improved for more serious driving. Popular upgrades include:

  • Lowering springs for a better stance and improved handling on a budget.

  • Adjustable Coilovers to fine-tune the balance between comfort and performance.

  • Sway bars to reduce body roll and improve stability during fast cornering.

  • Suspension Cradle Lockout Kit for better rear-end stability and reduced movement during aggressive driving.

SUSPENSION UPGRADES FOR THE S650 MUSTANG (2024+)

The new S650 Mustang has a more advanced suspension than the previous generation, but there’s always room for improvement.

Coilovers are popular among S650 owners who want full control over their car’s ride height and handling.
Lowering springs for a better stance and improved handling on a budget.
Suspension Cradle Lockout Kit for improved control and reduced flex, giving the S650 more stability under aggressive driving conditions.

BENEFITS OF UPGRADING YOUR MUSTANG’S SUSPENSION

Upgrading your suspension can transform how your Mustang drives. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Better handling: Your car will feel more responsive and easier to control in tight corners.

  • Improved ride quality: With the right setup, you can smooth out bumps and enjoy a more comfortable ride.

  • Enhanced looks: Lowering your Mustang can give it a more aggressive, sporty appearance.

  • Increased performance: Whether you’re driving on the street or the track, your Mustang will perform at a higher level with upgraded suspension parts.

CONCLUSION

Whether you own an S650 or S550 Mustang, upgrading your suspension can make a huge difference in how your car handles, feels, and looks. From lowering springs to adjustable shocks and the suspension cradle lockout kit, there are many ways to enhance your Mustang’s suspension. Just be sure to choose the upgrades that match your driving style, whether you’re cruising down the highway or taking on a track. With the right suspension upgrades, your Mustang will not only look great but also feel like a whole new car on the road.

2024 Ford Mustang (S650) Pricing and Buyers GuideOCT 26, 2023

2024 Ford Mustang (S650) Pricing and Australia Buyers Guide

Since its introduction in 2015, the S550 Mustang has been the best-selling sports car. Finally available in right-hand-drive configuration, the Mustang proved to be the perfect car to reestablish the American pony car legend. However, after a successful eight years on the global market, it is time for an all-new Mustang model. Introduced in late 2022, the S650 seventh-generation Mustang arrived in Ford’s US showrooms in the spring of 2023. But, Australian (and most of the global) customers will have to wait until early 2024 to get their hands on the hottest (and only) new muscle car.

Ford has just released all relevant information about the 2024 Mustang along with the prices, packages and equipment. As you can expect, the new model is more expensive than the outgoing, but the price hike is justified with advanced features, improved performance and more standard equipment. Like with the S550 generation, standard-spec models include a lot of features that are optional on the US versions. There are also a few subtle mechanical changes to cars. So, in order to find out what is the best 2024 Mustang for you, we bring you the ultimate S650 2024 Ford Mustang Pricing Buyers Guide

2024 FORD MUSTANG ECOBOOST PRICE (FROM $64,990 PLUS ON ROAD COSTS)

Ford Mustang Ecoboost 2024 Australia

The entry-level 2024 Mustang is again the 2.3-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder EcoBoost model with slightly more power than the outgoing car at 232 kW and a pretty substantial 475 Nm of torque. It is available only as a Fastback coupe and only with a 10-speed automatic transmission. However, it is pretty loaded from the start with dark grey 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires, an active-valve exhaust system with quad tailpipes, Brembo brakes, LED headlights, paddle shifters and limited-slip differential with 3.55:1 final drive. One of the coolest S650 Mustang options – the Drift Brake is included in the base spec model, which will make new Ford Mustang fans very happy and very sideways.

There are eleven exterior colours, and only Oxford White and Race Red are at no extra cost; for the rest of the lineup, Ford is asking an additional $700. In the interior, leather-accented seats are standard. The version of the 2024

EcoBoost Fastback will have what is known as a Premium Package interior in America. It includes a bigger 12.4-inch digital cluster, a 13.2-inch infotainment screen, wireless charging, Sync 4 with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, an approach detection system with welcome/farewell lightning sequence and safety drivers’ assistance monitoring, including blind spot monitoring as standard. Interestingly, the base spec 2024 EcoBoost will also get a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer. Due to the upgraded infotainment system, all 2024 Mustangs sold on the market will have track apps accessible through the 12.4 digital instrument cluster. Driver will be able to use acceleration timer, brake performance, lap timer, line-lock feature and accelerometer. However, launch control is available only for manual-equipped cars, so it is not available on EcoBoost models. Also, five driving modes are standard as well.

Besides all of that, buyers will have a chance to purchase the EcoBoost Appearance Pack ($1,500), which includes a special EcoBoost spoiler and racing stripes which will give the 2024 Mustang EcoBoost Fastback a unique look. Even though the price of the 2024 2.3 EcoBoost has increased some $9000 over the outgoing “high performance” model, it still represents fantastic value for the money without any real competition. For example, the 2023 Toyota Supra is almost $25,000 more expensive!

2024 FORD MUSTANG GT PRICE (FROM $76,990 PLUS ON ROAD COSTS)

Ford Mustang GT 2024 Australia

Image via Ford

The sweet spot of the 2024 S650 Mustang range is, of course, the GT. Powered by an upgraded 5.0-litre, naturally-aspirated V8 engine, this rapid pony delivers more power than its predecessor at 347 kw and 550 Nm. It is 10 kW less than the US-spec GT and 8 kW more than the previous model. The GT is available as a 6-speed manual (standard version) or 10-speed automatic (around $4000 option). The base spec model is a GT Fastback coupe, but the GT Convertible can be ordered at an additional cost. All 2024 Mustang GTs for the market will come with an auxiliary engine oil cooler to endure extreme temperatures. The high level of standard features will include all the EcoBoost equipment, plus leather seats, staggered 19-inch wheels with performance rubber, Brembo brakes, a unique hood with cooling ducts, an active exhaust system, Drift brake and LED headlights. The 2024 S650 GT will also get driver’s apps, driving mods, and the launch control for manual-equipped models. The dashboard layout is the same, with a 12.4-inch customizable digital cluster and a 13.2-inch infotainment screen. The Bang & Olufsen premium audio is also standard.

The colour palette is the same; white and red are no-cost options. All other colours are optional at $700. However, the 2024 Mustang GT has few more options than the EcoBoost and first on the list are Recaro seats at $2,950, which are a must-have if you plan to track your car. The GT Appearance Package will add $1,500, and you will get racing stripes and a unique rear spoiler. The mighty MangneRide suspension will set you back $2,950, and adds red Brembo calipers. There is also the Black Pack, a $1,500 appearance package that will include black badges (front pony, 5.0 and rear GT), black mirror caps, black roof and black wheels. However, the MagneRide, Recaro seats and GT Appearance Pack are unavailable on GT Convertible models, only on Fastback. If you select the MagneRide option, your car will have red Brembo brake callipers, as mandatory. At the same time, if you opt for the GT Appearance Pack, you cannot get the MagneRide or Black Pack. However, if you choose the Black Pack, you can get the MagneRide option along with it.

The upcoming Mustang GT S650 is, on average, around $12,000 more expensive than the outgoing model, which is a significant rise in pricing. Even though the top-of-the-line 2024 Ford Mustang GT Convertible can cost around $90,000, it is still reasonably priced compared to the 2024 BMW M4, which starts at $149,000 in its base form with a six-speed manual. Also, with the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger being discontinued, the S650 Mustang is the only 5.0-litre V8 powered muscle car still around.

2024 FORD MUSTANG DARK HORSE PRICE (FROM $99,102 PLUS ON ROAD COSTS)

Ford Mustang Dark Horse 2024 Australia

Image via Ford

The 2024 Mustang Dark Horse is the newest performance “special edition” model, which sits above the GT range and replaces the S550 Mach 1. The good news is that Ford decided to offer this model to Australian buyers in limited quantities (1000 examples). However, the bad news is that the delivered Mustang Dark Horse will be less powerful than the American model. The US-spec cars have 500 hp (373 kW) from a tuned 5.0-liter V8. The models will have “just” 349 kw, which is just two kw more than the standard 2024 Mustang GT. Apparently, there is a slightly different exhaust manifold for Dark Horse models to comply with local environmental and noise regulations. The auxiliary engine oil coolers are part of the standard package.

The 2024 Dark Horse will come with a unique front fascia, wheel design, rear spoiler, graphic package, colour choices and with MagneRide suspension as standard. There are also a few more mechanical upgrades, like the Torsen limited slip differential and the Termec 6-speed manual, which considerably improve the Getrag manual transmission in the GT model. The famous Drift Brake feature is included in the standard equipment. The 2024 Dark Horse will only come as a Fastback coupe, and the 10-speed automatic is available, but it will raise the base price to over $103,002.

The interior is the same as in the GT, with special Recaro sport seats in “Black Onyx and Indigo Blue” as the only option at $2,950. The dashboard has the same digital cluster and infotainment screams, driver’s apps and features. An exciting and cool detail is the special blue gear leaver knob, which is made of titanium and can only be found on Dark Horse with manual transmission. Again, Oxford White and Race Red are no-cost options, and prestige colours are $700. The Dark Horse Appearance Pack, which costs $2,750, will add blue Brembo brake callipers, vinyl graphic decal for the bonnet and a black roof, and it is only available on Shadow Black or Vapor Blue cars. However, with that pack, you can also get a special Blue Ember Prestige Paint, unique to the Dark Horse model.

The 2024 Mustang Dark Horse is the first new Mustang to hit six figures, which is somewhat of a milestone. If we compare it to the 2021 Mustang Mach 1, which occupies the same spot in the Mustang range, the 2024 Dark Horse is significantly more expensive. When it was released, the Mach 1 was $83,000 plus on-road costs on the market, which is considerably less than the Dark Horse’s $99,102 base price.

2024 FORD MUSTANG AVAILABILITY

Ford announced the product and pricing lists in October of 2023, stating that the first deliveries for the market will commence in Q2 of 2024. At the same time, the customers can specify their 2024 Mustang on the Ford Motor Company official site. However, the notable absence of the 2024 Dark Horse version from the official site suggests that this model might already be sold out. This may be due to it being limited to only 1000 allocations Ford has provided for the market and that its deliveries are due at the same time as the EcoBoost and the GT models.

The S650 2024 Mustang GT, Ecoboost and Dark Horse’s imminent arrival has set enthusiasts hearts racing. Yes, the engine and trims are making headlines, but so are the vehicle’s captivating new shades. In this article, we explore the various options for exterior colours available on the 2024+ Mustang GT, Ecoboost and the all new Dark Horse.

BLUE EMBER

Mustang Blue Ember

Image via Ford Media

This deep blue shade steals the show, reminiscent of a majestic dark horse. Enriched with gold metallic flakes, the paint catches sunlight, radiating a delicate glow that ensures it commands attention wherever it goes. This exceptional shade owes its dynamism to “special effect pigments,” allowing for a dramatic colour shift based on lighting and angle. As Ford describes, a harmonious blend of colours was used to achieve this visual magic. In photos, the paint intriguingly seems to shift between dark blue and a hint of light purple, all dependent on varied conditions. But there’s a catch! It’s exclusive to the Mustang Dark Horse variant with the Appearance Package.

RAPID RED METALLIC TINTED CLEARCOAT

Mustang Rapid Red

Image via Ford Media

Rapid Red is a very rich, glossy shade of metallic red that was showcased on a s650 convertible at the Detroit Auto Show. Ford has reassured fans that Rapid Red Metallic will grace the S650 Mustang lineup, continuing its legacy. Ford Australia has confirmed Rapid Red is a Prestige Colour optional add-on which is exclusive to 2024 s650 Mustang Ecoboost and GT.

RACE RED

Mustang Race Red

Image via Ford Media

Although not as rich and deep metallic as the Rapid Red, Race Red stands out with its brilliance, offering a classic Mustang colour option. Renowned as one of the longest-standing colours from the launch of the s550 back in 2015, Race Red continues to be a popular choice among Mustang Enthusiasts and it looks like it is here to stay on the 2024 model year lineup. The Race Red colour will be a no-cost option from Ford.

CARBONISED GREY METALLIC

Carbonized Gray

Yet another colour that was featured at the launch event in Detroit on a s650 Fastback Ecoboost Mustang. Carbonized Gray Metallic is a contemporary shade in the Mustang lineup, merging elegance with aggression. It is relatively new and was initially launched in 2021 to replace the magnetic colour. Beautifully highlighting the Mustang’s dynamic contours while offering a contemporary twist to traditional car colours. As per Ford, Carbonised Grey this is a Prestige Colour option.

DARK MATTER GREY METALLIC

Mustang Dark Matter

As the name suggests, Dark Matter Gray is the darkest of all the grey options available, bordering on black. It’s a fantastic choice for those who adore the mystique of dark shades but want something different from the regular black. Dark Matter Grey is a Prestige Colour option for the 2024+ Mustang.

ICONIC SILVER METALLIC

Mustang Iconic Silver

First revealed in 2020 as a replacement for Ingot Silver, the “Iconic” colour is coming back to the 2024+ Mustang Line up. Its light grey tone allows it to beautifully complement the sleek lines and contours of any vehicle, particularly accentuating design details – providing a subtle yet impactful aesthetic. The Iconic Silver Metallic colour is a Prestige Colour option exclusively available for the 2024 mustang gt and ecoboost.

VAPOUR BLUE METALLIC

Mustang Vapor Blue

A fresh new colour making its debut for the 2024 Mustang s650 line up, Vapor Blue is an all-new light bluish-grey colour that is both unique and stunning with hints of metallic. With its modern tone and vibe, it’s set to be a crowd-favourite when deliveries begin. Vapour Blue Metallic is an optional extra being a Prestige Colour.

GRABBER BLUE METALLIC

Mustang Grabber Blue

Grabber Blue Metallic holds a special place in the hearts of Mustang enthusiasts, though it hasn’t consistently been a staple of the iconic pony car. The Mustang colour palette first welcomed Grabber Blue in 1970, instantly capturing the attention and admiration of car enthusiasts. Fast forward to today, and Grabber Blue Metallic stands out as a go-to colour, renowned for its striking and vibrant shade. It possesses a mesmerising depth and a glossy metallic sheen that makes it an absolute head-turner on the streets. Ford will be offering Grabber Blue as a prestige mustang colour add on.

ATLAS BLUE METALLIC

Atlas Blue

Introduced in 2022, Atlas Blue offers a darker and more subtle blue option for the Mustang when compared to Grabber Blue. For those seeking a sophisticated yet captivating hue, Atlas Blue is the way to go. Atlas Blue is another colour that will be offered as a Prestige Colour by Ford Dealers as an optional upgrade.

YELLOW SPLASH METALLIC

Yellow Splash

Image via Ford Media

One of the newcomers Ford introduced to the 2024 Mustang colour palette. The previous two yellow colour choices that were available on the s550 Mustang, Triple Yellow and Grabber Yellow, were distinguished by their solid, non-metallic finish. Yellow Splash Metallic, on the other hand, introduces a vibrant and bold yellow hue reminiscent of its predecessors but with an added twist – metallic flakes in the paint. This not only enhances the car’s overall aesthetic but also adds a subtle shimmer, bringing a new dimension to this striking colour. Yellow Splash Metallic is prestige colour option when ordering your Mustang from a Ford dealer

OXFORD WHITE

Oxford White

Oxford White has been around for numerous Mustang Generations, due its classic and nostalgic appeal to Mustang Enthusiasts around the world. We don’t see Ford discontinuing this colour any time soon and is here to stay for the 2024+ Mustangs offered. Oxford White will be offered by Ford Dealers as a no cost option.

SHADOW BLACK

Mustang Shadow Black

Image via Ford Media

Shadow Black has been Ford’s go to choice for a Black shade. It  was first introduced to the mustang colour palette in 2016 with the s550 Mustang. It’s a deep, rich black infused with metallic flecks, giving it a dynamic and multi-dimensional presence. When the light hits the Shadow Black finish, it shimmers, revealing its complex layers and pearlescent sheen. It has been a popular choice among Mustang enthusiasts for years, and we expect it to be a fan favourite for many years to come. Although a classic colour, shadow black is an optional extra when it comes to opting it or your Mustang through Ford.

2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse vs. 2024 Ford Mustang GT (Detailed Review)OCT 16, 2023

2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse vs. 2024 Ford Mustang GT (Detailed Review)

Nowadays, the appearance of a brand-new, naturally-aspirated, V8-powered muscle car is a rare and wonderful thing. So, when Ford announced the 7th generation and confirmed that it would be classic in its approach but modern in its technology, enthusiasts all over the world were ecstatic. Fortunately, Ford didn’t disappoint, and the venerable EcoBoost and fantastic 5.0-litre GT have returned with more power, sharper lines and advanced features. However, Ford introduced a very interesting model called the Mustang Dark Horse for most discriminating muscle car connoisseurs.

This version of the S650 Mustang is very significant since it is the first time that Ford presents an entirely new performance model, which is not Shelby, Cobra, Mach I or Boss, all of which have predecessors dating back to the ’60s. The Dark Horse is a Mustang performance for the 21st century and more than just a “parts bin special”, which is something 2021 to 2023 Mach I was accused of being. The 2024 Mustang Dark Horse S650 is based on the current GT but takes it up a notch. Ever since its introduction, Mustang fans have been eager to see what the Dark Horse is and how it differs from the standard GT. Here is all you need to know.

THE EXTERIOR DESIGN (S650 MUSTANG)

The first thing to notice when you start comparing the GT to Dark Horse is the exterior design taking the iconic vehicle to new levels. Ford did a great job enhancing the GT’s overall look with the Dark Horse bits and components since this version is recognisable and aggressive but still smooth. Also, the GT is available as a Fastback or Convertible, while the Dark Horse is a coupe only. We’ll explore the various exterior design features that make the Dark Horse stand out when compared to a s650 GT.

REDESIGNED FRONT BUMPER, SPLITTER & AIR CURTAINS

The Dark Horse features a distinct front fascia, optimised for  aerodynamics and enhanced downforce. The front grille boasts larger, open vented areas compared to the 2024 Mustang GT, significantly improving engine cooling.

2024 MUSTANG GT & DARK HORSE REAR SPOILER & DIFFUSER

At the rear, the Dark Horse has an aggressive and more prominent spoiler compared to the GT. The Darkhorse Wing has a steeper angle with an optional handling pack “gurney flap” to create more downforce which ensures high speed stability and grip. In addition to this, the race inspired rear bumper diffuser on the darkhorse helps manage airflow underneath the vehicle with its design for a further reduction in drag.

2024 MUSTANG GT & DARK HORSE COLOURS

Offering a notably more restricted colour palette compared to the GT, the Dark Horse model distinguishes itself with a unique flair in its aesthetic offerings. Most notable among its shades is the exclusive colour shifting ‘Blue Ember,’ a colour unavailable in any other models, which lends the Dark Horse a unique touch of individuality and elegance. In addition to this a vinyl package and hand-painted graphics create an impactful visual language throughout the vehicle and further accentuates its character. The following table showcases the available colours for the s650 Ford Mustang GT vs Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Colours to be confirmed for Australia).

PERFORMANCE WHEEL OPTIONS

The Mustang GT showcases a distinctive 19-inch black wheel design with a 10-spoke pattern reminiscent of a spider’s web. With the Dark Horse edition, Ford further accentuates its character by offering unique wheel choices, including a standard set of aggressive split 5-spoke wheels. Yet, the highlight for the Dark Horse is the carbon fibre wheel upgrade. These 5-spoke carbon fibre wheels not only look classy but are also lightweight, with each wheel weighing a mere 20.1 lbs, thereby enhancing both the appearance and performance of the vehicle. Now for those enthusiasts looking to take it a step further and looking to upgrade to a 20″ wheel that is wider and want a different style, we have got you covered here at My Stang Mods. We offer the best from premium industry leading brands such as Velgen, Vossen, Rohana, and Carroll Shelby.

UNIQUE DARK HORSE EMBLEMS

The Dark Horse Mustang introduces unique badging, showcasing a stylized horse head logo, distinctively oriented facing forward – a first for a Ford Mustang. Surrounded by a futuristic sci-fi inspired horseshoe-shaped hoof, this emblem diverges from the traditional “GT” and “5.0” logos, infusing a unique character into the new model.

INTERIOR FEATURES AND COMFORT OF MUSTANG GT 2024 AND DARK HORSE

The Dark Horse Mustang’s interior closely mirrors the GT, with distinct contrasting indigo blue stitching on key interior elements as its standout feature. Both share a digital dash and six selectable driving modes. The Dark Horse has the same flat bottom steering wheel shape as the GT however it  is suede-wrapped flat-bottomed with blue stitching. The optional appearance package also includes RECARO® performance seats with blue bolsters and black Dinamica suede centres. A unique feature exclusive to the Dark Horse Mustang is the anodised blue titanium manual shift knob, designed to stay cool in warm conditions.

The S650 Mustang GT & Dark Horse features an impressive 13.2-inch infotainment display as standard that hosts Ford’s advanced SYNC 4 multimedia software. This state-of-the-art system ensures both, the drivers and passengers enjoy a user-friendly and intuitive experience, with features that include real-time updates and improved voice recognition. Complementing the cutting-edge tech, the Mustang also comes equipped with a premium B&O audio system, delivering crystal clear sound quality, making every drive both a visual and auditory delight.

THE ENGINE

You cannot have a performance model without significant engine changes, and Ford upgraded the Dark Horse and justified its performance credentials. The venerable 5.0-litre from the GT is slightly modified and now produces 500 hp (367 kW) and 567 Nm of torque. That is 20 hp and 4 Nm more than the GT. Both engines use the same Gen 4 dual intake system with a 12.0:1 compression ratio, but the Dark Horse version had titanium connecting rods and different ECU tuning. The Dark Horse V8 makes power a bit higher up the rev range, which explains its 7.500 rpm red line.

THE TRANSMISSION

Both the GT and Dark Horse come with the 6-speed manual transmission as standard and the well-known 10-speed automatic as optional. However, the GT has the Getrag MT-82 manual transmission, which has been used since 2011, and although it is a decent box, it isn’t the best choice for this model. The Dark Horse has the Tremec TR-3160, which is regarded as a better and more compliant choice and has been used in the S550 Shelby GT350 and 2021-23 Mustang Mach I. Also, the Dark Horse has an optional 3.73:1 rear-end ratio for maximum acceleration. The 10-speed is mechanically the same in both models (slightly different gear ratios for the Dark Horse version), and it is one of the best automatics around. It comes with the launch control paddle shifters, and since it has ten gears, it even awards the driver slightly better fuel economy.

THE SUSPENSION

The S650 Mustang GT chassis is already very competent in terms of handling, but for Dark Horse, Ford prepared several crucial upgrades. The list starts with the unique strut brace and K-brace to improve rigidity and steering feel. The 5.0 GT has Magneride suspension as an option while it is part of the standard package on the Dark Horse. Also, the Dark Horse comes with more aggressive standard rubber (Pirelli P-Zero tyres) and has a Torsen limited-slip differential, while the GT has a standard unit. The Handling Pack will include stiffer springs and wider tyres, while the Performance Pack on the GT will get you a drift hand brake, which is a standard on the Dark Horse.

MUSTANG GT VS. DARK HORSE: PERFORMANCE METRICS

All of the hardware and tuning that differentiate the S650 Mustang GT from the Dark Horse are cool and interesting, but the main question is how it performs on the street and what the performance gains are if you opt for a more powerful Dark Horse. Well, here is the answer. The 2024 Mustang GT with the Performance pack and 6-speed manual can zip to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. However, this is not the quickest of the Mustang GTs since the 10-speed-equipped GT Convertible with the Performance Pack can sprint to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds flat, despite some 70 kg more.

However, the Dark Horse’s slight advantage in power, drivetrain hardware and suspension improvements pay off, and when equipped with a 3.73:1 rear end and 10-speed automatic, it will reach 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, which is blisteringly quick. When equipped with a 6-speed manual, the same manoeuvre is possible in 4.1 seconds. Interestingly, in its most potent version, the Dark Horse is just slightly slower to 100 km/h than the mighty 2020 Shelby GT500 with an insane 760 hp!

But, the standard GT is not totally inferior to the Dark Horse. If we compare the quarter mile times, the regular 5.0-litre GT is slightly faster. Even though it is only by 0.1 seconds (12.6 vs. 12.5 seconds), it is still enough to win a drag race. The reason for this is the difference in transmission since the Tremec-equipped Dark Horse has shorter gears than the Getrag-equipped Mustang GT. So when you are racing the quarter-mile strip, Dark Horse needs three shifts while GT only needs two, so it is faster to cover the 402 m distance. In terms of top speed, both models are limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but when the limiter is removed, we can expect top speeds of around 270 km/h (170 mph).

THE PRICE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUSTANG GT AND DARK HORSE

As you expected, the 2024 Mustang GT and the Dark Horse have a significant price difference. The base GT model in America is just over $41,000 (6-speed manual Fastback), while the base Dark Horse is $59,000. Both models have the option of Performance/Handling Package at $4,500. Undoubtedly, the Dark Horse is a more powerful, faster and cooler proposition but much more expensive. Is it worth the investment? It depends on the customer since the standard GT is almost as competent but much more affordable. When the s650 Mustangs launch in Australia (Q1-Q2 2024), the 2024 Mustang GT is expected to arrive standard with the performance pack and is estimated to set you back around $72,000 AUD + on roads. Whereas the 2024 Dark Horse Mustang, we can expect its price to be around $90,000 AUD + on roads, on the local market. At the time of writing this article, prices are still yet to be confirmed by  Ford.
